Perenco is proud to support the 2010 archeological campaign on the Naachtun site, once at the heart of the Maya civilization in Guatemala. The site, which today is part of a protected Maya Reserve, is in the province of Petén in northern Guatemala.
This French-Guatemalan archaeological project, promoted by the French Ambassador in Guatemala Mme Michèle Ramis-Plum, led by the research center UMR 8096 of CNRS-Paris University 1, with the support of the French government, will conduct important work between 2010 and 2014 to further understand the Maya civilization in the area. Naachtun was the main regional center between the two ancient cities of Tikal and Calakmul, and is one of the few sites of the El Mirador Basin that survived its collapse in circa 150 AD.
This project, part funded by Perenco, is part of a long established series of French-Guatemalan research, a collaboration which began in the 1960s and has already unearthed many aspects of ancient Maya civilization.
In June and July 2011, Perenco will support the restoration and exhibition of pieces from the national Museum of Guatemala, at an international held at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. The exhibition called "The Maya from dawn to dusk in Guatemala", will show newly discovered pieces of the country's heritage through more than 150 objects from different areas and eras, retracing the rise and fall of this brilliant civilization.
