Alexandra BEMBATOUM

General Counsel, Cameroon

After completing management and law studies in the United Kingdom, Alexandra joined Perenco in Cameroon, her country of origin. At the head of the legal department since 2015, she is particularly proud to have contributed to the FLNG project, a project emblematic for the group.

What is your career pathway ? Why did you chose Perenco ?

I was born in Senegal, with a Cameroonian nationality. I grew up in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Tanzania. I studied international management and French in Bath, in England. As part of my Bachelor I studied for six months at HEC Paris and six months at HEC Montreal. There I discovered business law, which particularly attracted me. So I continued my studies in a law school in London where I graduated in one year.
At the end of 2010 I returned to Cameroon and I applied at Perenco.

Can you describe your professional journey with Perenco ?

I joined Perenco in 2011 as a junior lawyer, when Total assets were taken over, it was a very interesting time. In 2015 Perenco sent me to London to pass the equivalent of the commercial bar, as part of a seven-month accelerated training. Upon my return I was appointed general counsel for the Cameroon subsidiary.

What does your job entail and which challenges do you face ?

The legal management falls under administrative management but we work with all the departments, in particular to draft contracts; the finance department for partner relationships; Marine to supervise vessel contracts; SCM for service contracts; HR for contracted staff; or Projects to support their relationships with contracted service companies.
We also keep a permanent watch on the laws in force in Cameroon and also in the CEMAC area (the Central African Economic and Monetary Community) and we follow OHADA standards (Organization for the harmonization of business law in Africa).                            .
We are involved in the relationship with State institutions, in collaboration with the management of the subsidiary: Ministry of Mines, Customs, Taxes and the administration more generally. As the State is also a partner in our oil permits, we regularly report on our activities.
Finally, we support the compliance function to guarantee that the subsidiary follows the Group's environmental and ethical charter.

Which corporate value(s) do you most admire at Perenco ?

Courage.
This value shows in all the projects that the company initiates as a whole.
