Perenco has been operating in Guatemala since 2001. Located in the Northern Petén region, the Xan field allowed the production of 8,000 BOEPD in 2017, which represents 90% of Guatemala's national oil production.
To remedy the decline of the Xan field, Perenco has deployed a substantial investment programme in Guatemala. In 2014, a new optimisation project was set up to improve the energy efficiency of the operation and to increase the water management capacity above 220,000 bwpd.
The Xan field production is carried to the Piedras Negras export terminal by a pipeline system of 450 km. Perenco also operates the La Libertad refinery with a processing capacity of 5,000 BOEPD. The latter produces oil for Xan and asphalt for the Central American road infrastructure market.
Perenco is also invested with the communities of Guatemala. A significant part of its contribution to the State is thus being distributed to the local municipalities of Petén, providing assistance to support the development of the rural communities. In addition, Perenco has implemented a social investment programme, which aims to empower communities in its operating area.
